Turnip The Beat: A Transformational Celebration of Del Paso Heights

This summer, Turnip the Beat transformed an empty lot into a gathering place where food, art, and community came together. What began as a simple idea—to feed people and celebrate culture—became a powerful demonstration of what neighborhood revitalization can look like when joy leads the way. Each event brought residents, artists, and chefs into shared space, creating not just meals but moments of connection and belonging.

We saw neighbors building new relationships, young people finding their voices on stage, and local chefs sharing meals that reminded us all of home. The lot next door is no longer just vacant land—it’s a tested model for how food and culture can spark transformation at the street level. Turnip the Beat proved that when we invest in joy and nourishment, we invest in the future of our community.

Help Universoul Cafe Recover From a Devastating Break-In.

Over the weekend the Universoul Cafe space was broken into and tens of thousands of dollars in equipment and supplies are gone and the building is heavily damaged, but the work and the need to feed people in our community continues.

Universoul Cafe is one of Sacramento’s leading food recovery organizations. Founded by Tonya Mack in 2019, they do revolutionary work recovering high-quality, unused food from hotels, restaurants, and events—food that would otherwise go to waste—and repurposing it to feed hungry families across the city.

Universoul Cafe has distributed over a million meals since its conception in November 2019 and caters dozens of local events every month providing fresh meals for community partners.
